On September 3, Righthaven filed a copyright infringement case against U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle (Rep). A recent AP article (Nev. Paper in Rare Legal Spat with Senate Hopeful) points out that Angle is widely praised by Review-Journal editors. Stephen Bates, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas, journalism professor, states in the piece: "To be suing a candidate during a major election, I've never seen anything like this. It just makes things incredibly awkward."
Several days earlier, Steve Friess wrote an article (Las Vegas Newspaper Sues Sharron Angle, Enters Journalistic Gray Zone) about this awkwardness as well. Friess included Mary Hausch, a separate University of Nevada, Las Vegas, journalism professor in his piece. In regards to how the Review-Journal would write a glowing endorsement of Angle while simultaneously suing her, Hausch said, "I guess they could say, 'We think she's a thief, but we like her a lot.'"
A website that lists the victims of Righthaven LLC 'shakedown' lawsuits that are causing irreparable harm to bloggers and advocacy websites.
Righthaven LLC -- a bottom feeding legal outfit -- has teamed up with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Denver Post to sue mom and pop websites, advocacy and public interest groups and forum board operators for copyright infringement. The strategy of Righthaven is to sue thousands of these website owners, who are primarily unfunded and will be forced to settle out of court.
To date Righthaven has been ordered to pay $323,138 in legal fees and sanctions. |
