It must be noted that this month "might" mark a turning point for Righthaven in that they may have started targeting their "no warning" lawsuits at websites that fall on the edges or outside of fair use.
A website that lists the victims of Righthaven LLC 'shakedown' lawsuits that are causing irreparable harm to bloggers and advocacy websites.
Righthaven LLC -- a bottom feeding legal outfit -- has teamed up with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Denver Post to sue mom and pop websites, advocacy and public interest groups and forum board operators for copyright infringement. The strategy of Righthaven is to sue thousands of these website owners, who are primarily unfunded and will be forced to settle out of court.
To date Righthaven has been ordered to pay $323,138 in legal fees and sanctions. |

At the Law Med Blog we will be fighting this shameless abuse of the legal system as a instrument of extortion. No settlement from here for this garbage.
ReplyDeleteI'm so confused at who gets sued here. If a company/website is listed as an LLC, how can individuals be held liable?
ReplyDeleteThere are some sites such as autoblogs that merely recopy stories from other sites and newspapers. These clearly fall outside the realm of fair use and if the papers themselves went after these they would clearly be within their rights to do so but the standing issue precludes Righthaven from any lawsuits until this issue is resolved.
